with Karen Scott-Barrs

RPN MA (Integrative Studies, Spirituality & Healing)

Karen served as nurse educator at Saskatchewan Polytechnic’s Saskatoon Campus for over 30 years, after nursing in acute and community mental health care settings for a decade. She is also a spiritual director/companion and writer with a focus on holistic healing.

Much of her lyrical writing has emerged from her personal healing experiences. She has developed T.R.U.S.T.: An Affirming Model for Inclusive Spiritual Care and The W.H.O.L.E. Care Framework for Integrative Health Care, Education, and Leadership. These frameworks have guided the development of 2 interprofessional electives (Spirituality and Health and Integrative Health Care) for the Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing (SCBScN) program. These frameworks, along with Karen’s years of experience facilitating related learning, form the basis for 2 related open access handbooks (2024): The Spiritual Dimension of Health Care and Integrative Health Care.

Karen is passionate about supporting health care providers in holistically promoting and restoring both their own and others’ well-being.  She also serves as a volunteer ally in support of truth, reconciliation and decolonization within health care and beyond.
